Inaugural Baukunst Creative Technologist Conference, SF 2022
Kate McAndrew
Co-Founder and GP at Baukunst
January 26, 2024
On May 4th and 5th of 2022, Baukunst gathered at The Interval at The Long Now — a prominent foundation for long-term thinking — to share projects, processes, and new areas of inquiry.
POWER OF THE COLLECTIVE
It’s our belief that individual genius is currently overrepresented in narratives around company building, and that the complex power of scenes is undervalued.
At Baukunst, we’re committed to creating a scene where we’re inspiring one another, giving each other ideas and tools to break through challenges, and ultimately, celebrating the great work we are all doing. Congregating in-person is an essential part of fostering this culture of creation.
THE ART OF BUILDING
In German, Baukunst means “the art of building.” The phrase served as a jumping off point for creative technologists to share reflections on their work as well as considerations regarding where we’re headed as a species.
Presentations and panel discussions over the 2-day event included:
- Automated Agriculture for the New Climate Era — Jason Prapas
- Building a Decentralized Wireless Network for the People– Joey Hiller + Clarissa Redwine, Helium Foundation
- Artist Collaboration: Object Poetics — Baukunst x Eric Ehrnschwender
- The Personal and Emotional Experience of Selling a Company – Stephan Ango + Jesse Genet, Lumi
- Creator Voices: The Truth about the Creator Economy from VSCO Creators Themselves — Hannah Donovan, VSCO + Manvir Kaur, Meez Jones, Meika Ejiasi, Creators
- Creative Technology at the Timescale of Human Civilization— Nicholas Brysiewicz, The Long Now Foundation

ARTIST COLLABORATION
We invited Hudson Valley-based ceramic artist Eric Ehrnschwender to build an interactive installation that gave attendees the chance to step in and create their own, custom art piece.
ARTEFACT
Events themselves are ephemeral, and so we created a zine to capture some of the key insights and intriguing ideas shared at the gathering. All members of our collective received a hard copy.
MORE TO COME
Our inaugural conference in San Francisco was just the beginning. We are continuing to host gatherings where members of our collective can meet, share stories, and come away freshly inspired. These experiences are by invitation only. If you’re interested in joining us at a future event, drop us a line and say hello. hello@baukunst.co
The Baukunst Creative Technologist conference in San Francisco was made possible by the generous sponsorship of The Filecoin Foundation.
